A Musical Offering
In the spring of 1747, J.S. Bach paid a visit to King Frederick the Great, where his son Carl Phillip Emmanuel was employed as a court musician. Curious to test Bach's contrapuntal prowess, Frederick presented Bach with a subject to improvise two fugues, first one in three parts, and then one in six. Declining the second of these tests, Bach took Frederick's subject home with him to create one of his most fascinating and iconic collections of music, The Musical Offering. This September, Filament joins forces with flautist Héloïse Degrugillier to present this musical feast for the mind and heart.

The Cries of London
Throughout the ages, English musical culture has stood apart from that of the European continent, and the Elizabethan Consort Song is perhaps the most typically “English” musical expression of its time. Joined once again by acclaimed mezzo-soprano Meg Bragle, Filament explores a varied selection of rarely heard songs by William Byrd and Orlando Gibbons alongside vocal and instrumental works of their contemporaries. Don’t miss this intimate program examining love, nature, and the poetry of urban life at the dawn of the modern world.
November 8, 7pm- Fleisher Art Memorial, Philadelphia, PA
November 9, 3pm- First Presbyterian Church, Bethlehem, PA
Rococo Dialogues
With Rococo Dialogues, Filament celebrates the salons of Anne Louise Brillon and the musical inventions they sparked. Madame Brillon, a brilliant musician and keyboardist living in Paris in the 18th century, was a confidante of Benjamin Franklin, and also the muse for a burgeoning genre of chamber music, the accompanied keyboard sonata. In this colorful and innovative program, Filament shares music dedicated to her by Luigi Boccherini and Johann Schobert, alongside trios of Haydn and some of Brillon’s own music. Allowing these varied works to speak to one another, Filament links the world of Enlightenment era salons to our own vibrant time.
